I had been a plumber for many years. But I felt drawn to nursing. As a local member of the Catholic church, I’ve known of Saint Mary for a long time. I had no idea they were starting a nursing program until my wife, who works for a local business, had a conversation with a Sister of Charity about my intention of becoming a Registered Nurse. She told my wife I should look at Saint Mary because they were creating a BSN program. Everyone I spoke with, from the nursing program, admissions, or the business office were always pleasant and very helpful. Those first impressions stuck with me as I compared programs and chose Saint Mary.
From the director down to the professors, I felt they have my best interest in mind. They want us to succeed and have us review material until we “get it.”
At USM, they knew me as a person and not another number. The nursing program gives each student what they need, whether it’s one-on-one attention or the space to be creative.
I’ve enjoyed watching how my classmates and I have grown from potential nurses to competent nursing professionals. We speak and act like real, caring nurses now, not the somewhat confused, yet well-intended, nursing students.
